HIGH RIDGE, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Neighbors are outraged after someone broke into a house in High Ridge and stole military medals.

Police believe someone broke into a home near the intersection of Highway 30 and route PP late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning. The residents of the house were not home.

“Apparently, they forced entry through a child’s bedroom and gained access to the valuables,” said Lt. Gary Higginbotham with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Department.

The thieves stole gold jewelry with diamonds, a handgun and a television. But they also stole a Bronze Star and Purple Heart, which police say were awarded to the victim’s grandfather.

“In my eyes it’s inexcusable. I mean the other items are bad enough but those items that can never be replaced, it’s just inexcusable,” said Higginbotham.

“That’s pretty low,” one neighbor said.

Police are checking fingerprints and local pawn shops to see if those responsible try to sell the stolen medals and jewelry.
