KIRKWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

News 4 has been tracking the sudden crime trend of contractors losing thousands of dollars to the hands of thieves.

A Richmond Heights man had $30,000 dollars in tools stolen from his trailer on April 8. Two more similar cases occurred recently.

Carpenter John Yevrayev lost thousands of dollars’worth of tools in one day. Thieves stole his trailer and more than $19,000 worth of tools from one of his work sites in Kirkwood.

“The trailer was completely empty, completely, even boxes with the screws. Gone,” Yevrayey said.

The trailer was found nine days later and many miles from the job site.

The same thing happened to Patrick Theodore.

“Yeah it's set me back about two weeks,” Theodore said. “So I've been struggling getting some equipment together right away, my insurance has been working with me.”

He's out $13,000. His trailer and equipment haven't turned up yet. Theodore owns a landscaping and handiwork company in South City. He last saw his trailer at the intersection of Nottingham and January.

Both contractors said their trailers were locked and secure, but that wasn't enough. The thieves sliced the lock, hitched the trailer and took off. Police reports have been filed in both cases.

Meanwhile, the victims are forced start over.
