ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A memorial mass for former St. Louis Cardinals catcher and broadcaster Joe Garagiola was held Wednesday morning at St. Ambrose Church.

It was attended by family, friends and fans – including members of the Cardinals front office.

“There’s so many ways he touched our franchise.  It was nice for us to pay our respects here,” Cardinals team president Bill DeWitt III said.

Garagiola was signed by the Cardinals at 16-years-old and helped the team with the World Series in 1946.  Then after stints with the Pirates, Cubs and Giants he went on to even greater heights in broadcasting.  That culminated in an induction into the Hall of Fame in 1991.

“You look back at his career and I think he’s known more for his broadcasting than actually as a player,” Cardinals GM John Mozeliak said. “I think that shows you his work ethic and dedication to something other than just what happened on the field.”

Garagiola was 90-years-old.
