BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

There is a proposal in Illinois for the state to put a device on cars to see how many miles citizens are driving.

The state would take that data to use in order to charge a tax on drivers depending on miles driven. It's all in an effort to make money because the state is losing out on gas tax revenue thanks to more fuel efficient cars on the road.

Yet, those fuel-efficient vehicles are still contributing to the same wear and tear on the roads and tax revenue generated at the gas pump is quickly depleting. As more people opt for cars with better gas mileage or even electric cars, state lawmakers say that funds need to come from somewhere.

They're proposing that Illinois drivers use a devise to track their mileage, and tax them by the mile. The proposal calls for two possibilities:

First, drivers can have a device put on their cars that tracks when they’re in Illinois and charge a tax for that.

Or drivers can opt for the flat tax of one and a half cent per mile if they don't want the tracking device on their car due to privacy concerns.

Illinois Senate President John Cullerton made the initial tax proposal and said that he wants Illinois to be the first state in the country to make these changes but believes the concept is inevitable.

Senator Cullerton's plan would create a commission to figure out the specifics of the proposal but doesn't anticipate any major changes in taxation happening for a couple of years.
