ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Officials with the St. Louis Zoo are asking St. Charles County to consider supporting a sales tax for funding.

Residents of St. Louis City and County already pay property tax to help fund the zoo but officials said operating costs have increased.

According to CBS Radio, St. Charles County officials said the zoo should consider charging admission fees instead of raising taxes.

Officials with the zoo, which is known for its free admission, said charging for entry would reduce the number of people who visit.

According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, there is currently a bill pending the Missouri legislature which would raise sales tax about one-eighth percent. If passed, the bill could impact taxes in St. Charles, Jefferson, Franklin and St. Louis Counties along with the City of St. Louis.

Zoo officials said they hope the issue will be on the November ballot in St. Charles County.
