SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

Major construction work on Interstate 44 created huge back-ups for people driving to the Cardinals home opener.

Gary Land was driving on I-44 trying to get to Opening Day at Busch Stadium.

“Hey, this is a holiday. They need to get it opened up and let these cardinal fans get here,” said Land.

MoDOT says there are 12 different construction projects underway.

Greg Horn, MoDOT District Engineer said, “If we would've closed down the highway say next weekend [April 15-17], Cardinals would've been in town Friday, Saturday and Sunday night. So that wouldn't have been good either. There's no good time for construction.”

MoDOT says crews started construction at the interchange from I-44 to northbound I-55 in March.

New construction gave fans only one lane on the ramp from eastbound I-44 to northbound I-55 while driving to the Opening Day celebration. This construction work will last until mid-May, MoDOT says.

Michael Cox, Cardinal fan said, “MoDOT, you know that Cardinal Nation is here [Busch Stadium] representing. You should not have closed down the highway. Please, please don't do that again to us.”

But MoDOT says there is really never a good time for construction.
