ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Two suspects are on the loose after a shooting put the Washington University medical campus on high alert.

Police said a 16-year-old boy was shot in the stomach near the intersection of Taylor and McKinley, close to Barnes Jewish Hospital Monday evening.

The victim told police he was with another teenager when two unknown suspects approached them and fired shots.

He was transported to the hospital and listed in critical, but stable condition.

The firearm believed to be used in the shooting was found in the 4500 block of Scott. Authorities said it was found to be reported stolen.

Major John Hayden from the St. Louis Police Department said, "Apparently what led to this was a group of teens right here [intersection of Taylor and McKinley] that got into some kind of confrontation and shots rang out and they all ran off in various directions."

Hayden said they do not know who the shooter is, but they are pulling surveillance footage and trying to figure out what exactly happened.

Moments after the shooting, Washington University put out an alert saying a person with a gun was seen on the medical school's campus, but the alert was lifted shortly after the alert was issued.

The investigation is ongoing.
