ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The idea of a place for conceal carry permit holders to check their guns outside of Busch Stadium has hit a few snags and will not be ready by the home opener on April 11.

Justin Hulsey came up with the idea after fellow veteran Chris Sanna was shot walking to his car from a Cardinal’s game in 2015.

“What can we do to stop it from happening again just on a public safety note, what can we do?” asked Hulsey.

The plan was to outfit a van to act as an armored mobile gun storage unit. But the plan has hit several roadblocks, including permitting and insurance.

“We’re still working on, we’re still trying and were going to keep pushing forward,” said Hulsey.

Hulsey said the idea could evolve into something more like lockers.

“No business starts one way and ends that way, any entrepreneur will tell you they molded things over and over again to meet what they have to do and that’s what we’re going to do,” said Hulsey.

When the concept was first announced, St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said he did not have enough details about the idea, but in his opinion, more guns downtown is not the answer.

With gun thefts from vehicles rising more than 70 percent in 2015, Chief Dotson continues to urge fans to leave their guns at home.
