ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A man is in stable condition after being struck and trapped by a train in downtown St. Louis Wednesday night.

The man, 27, was trapped by the train on elevated tracks near the intersection of South Second Street and Chouteau Avenue around 11 p.m.

The train driver told police that he saw a man standing on the tracks when the train came around a corner. The driver tried to stop and hit the emergency brakes, but was unable to come to a complete stop. The train hit the pedestrian at a slow rate of speed.

The man was taken to an area hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and listed in stable condition. Police think the man may have been drunk.

The St. Louis Fire Department successfully completed a high angle rescue to free the person, according to a tweet by the department.
