ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com / AP) – A man who had traveled to Colombia is the third Missouri resident with a confirmed case of the Zika virus.

Tuesday, the health department said that Colombia is a known area of Zika transmission.

The virus is mainly transmitted by a specific type of mosquito, and most people who get the virus have no symptoms, according to the health department. Others with the Zika virus suffer from fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes.

Health officials are investigating whether the virus is linked to birth defects in the children of women who caught the virus while pregnant.
