EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) --- State leaders in Illinois are meeting with high school students regarding concerns about college safety.

A College Safety Summit at Southern Illinois University-Edwards ville on Monday was hosted by U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis. The event brought together student leaders, housing directors and campus police to discuss ways to improve safety, specifically to stop a disturbing rise in sexual assaults on college campuses.

It is estimated that one in five women will be sexually assaulted in college.

“It’s on them as young males and young females to understand that they need to get that education before they get to college, where it becomes a problem,” said Davis.

Monday was the first of the statewide meetings. On Tuesday, meetings will be held at the University of Illinois-Campaign campus and Illinois State in Normal.
