FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) - The Franklin County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a powerful explosion went off inside a home in Catawissa.

Neighbors said it could be heard more than a mile away. A neighbor who didn't want to give his name described the explosion as, "A chest shuttering boom, one time. It sounded like a tank had blown up to me."

Investigators who went inside the home said they did not find a meth lab but discovered containers of Tannerite. The substance is a legal explosive that is primarily used to make exploding targets, which detonates when hit by a bullet. However, in large quantities, Tannerite can be a powerful explosive.

Sheriff Gary Toelke of the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said the house was vacant but when they contacted the owner, who lives in Robertsville, Mo., he refused to cooperate.

"Got a search warrant but he refused to let them in the house so they forced their way in," said Sheriff Toelke.

Authorities said the man was arrested after a possible meth lab was found in the home, along with empty Tannerite cans and firearms. According to authorities, the man is not allowed to have those items because he is a convicted felon.

The man’s name has not been released.
