ST. LOUIS - The Blues quest for the top spot in the Western Conference just got harder with the announcement that captain David Backes and goaltender Jake Allen will miss the remainder of the regular season with lower-body injuries.
Both will be re-evaluated before the start of the playoffs next week.
Allen, 25, played the first period in Sunday's game in Colorado. In the second, Anders Nilsson replaced him while Ken Hitchcock told the NBC Sports broadcast that Allen suffered an injury. Replay of the game shows Allen's right skate was clipped by an Avalanche player.

The net-minder missed 17 games earlier this season with a knee injury. Allen has posted a 26-15-3 record this season and a .920 save percentage.
Backes, 31, is one of two St. Louis players to have dressed in all 79 games this season. It is unclear when the Blues' captain was hurt, but an update from coach Ken Hitchcock is expected Monday afternoon.
Backes ranks second on the team in goals with 21 and 45 points overall.
The club has just three games remaining - Monday's action against Arizona, Thursday in Chicago and Saturday at home against Washington.
