Police are paying extra special attention to a stretch of Highway 61 between Wentzville and Troy.

The saturation of officers comes two months after Jacqueline Faudi, 36, and her two children were killed in an accident. Since that time, police officers have been concerned about motorists driving at a high rate of speed. For large stretches of the road, 60 MPH is the speed limit.

“Once you get on the other side of Highway 47, 70 is a little more of a speed limit up there. The farther out you get, the faster they go,” said driver Ed Fitzgerald.

Local law enforcement agencies have joined together for Operation Crossroads 61. Twice a week for the rest of 2016, there will be a saturation of officers on the highway. Officers from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, and from St. Charles County, City, Wentzville, Troy and Moscow Mills will be participating.

Police say they will make a public announcement about their presence on each day of the operation.

As the population of St. Charles and Lincoln Counties has grown, traffic on Highway 61 has increased. However, police say many drivers travel at interstate speeds even though some parts of the road have places where cars have to cross traffic for left turns or to get to the other side.
