Free gun locks at St. Louis City Hall Friday

Posted: Updated:

Free gun locks will be given away in the City of St. Louis Friday.

The gun locks will be given away to the public from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Friday at City Hall.

Women's Voices Raised for Social Justice is sponsoring the event and is working with partners like the City of St. Louis and the Deaconess Foundation.

According to the non-profit organization, nearly one-third of handguns in America is kept loaded and unlocked in the home. The group also said nearly 40 percent of homes with children in America have guns.

"Death and injury to children are preventable when guns kept in the home are unlocked, unloaded, and stored safely," Barbara Finch said in a press release. Finch is the Co-Chair for Lock it for Love, a project of Women's Voices Raised for Social Justice.

According to the group, Missouri has the sixth highest rate in the country of children under 18 years old killed by guns from 2001 to 2010.
