Meramec Caverns temporarily closed due to contaminated groundwater

Posted: Updated:
FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Potential groundwater contamination has suspended cave tours at the Meramec Caverns, also known as the LaJolla Springs Cave Complex. According to the EPA, the contamination site in Franklin County potentially has a high count of tichlorethylene vapors in the caverns.

TCE likely originate from two sources, the former TRW/Ramsey facility in downtown Sullivan, Missouri and the Sullivan landfill. They are both associated with the Oak Grove Village Well Superfund Site, which became part of EPA's National Priorities LIst in 2002.

The Meramac Caverns website says the caves are temporarily closed, but to check back soon for updates.
