LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A Lincoln County man is accused of burglarizing his neighbor while he slept.

The neighbor told police he awoke at 1 a.m. on March 24 to find the suspect, 28-year-old Matthew J. Brown, rummaging in his bedroom closet.

The victim said Brown then fled the home with a .22 caliber rifle and a shotgun.

After chasing Brown, the victim returned to his home and discovered his cell phone and car keys were missing. Minutes later, the victim said he saw his vehicle leaving the driveway.

Hours later, Brown was admitted to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries after he crashed the victim’s vehicle, according to authorities.

The victim said he had recently moved into the home. While he was moving his belongings into the residence, Brown approached him and asked to help, which the victim accepted.

Brown is charged with first-degree burglary, tampering with a motor vehicle and two counts of theft of a firearm. He is currently being held on a $50,000 cash-only bond at the Lincoln County Jail.
