Major Case Squad juggles record number of cases

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) - When the Major Case Squad gets called, how can detectives handle the workload without neglecting their home agency?

At the current pace, the Major Case Squad expects to handle a record number of cases this year. So far, there have been eight cases where the Major Case Squad has been called, including twice during the fourth week of March.

Major Jeff Connor is the Chief Deputy Sheriff of the Madison County Sheriff Department in addition to being a Chief Deputy Commander with the Major Case Squad. He said when a call comes out, each police department that is a part of Major Case Squad is asked if they have any detectives to spare. Local police departments often turn down the Major Case Squad when the local workload is too heavy to spare any detectives.

A Major Case Squad task force is composed of up to 25 detectives, but if multiple cases are being worked on at the same time, there are fewer detectives available.

Although it is difficult to predict the pace at which the Major Case Squad will continue to get called to cases in 2016, they solve 80 percent of their cases when they are called.
