(KMOV.com) – Pastor Ken McKoy is frustrated with the crime in St. Louis, so to bring awareness to this trend, he carried a cross through the West End neighborhood.

“It’s our response to the gun violence in our community,” he said. McKoy started this last May at his Progressive AME Zion Church by walking through some of the city’s neighborhoods that have seen the most violent crime in what he calls “a ministry of the presence.”

His goal is to bring a peaceful message and engage people on the street.

“It makes me happy to see that someone cares about the people who die in our community,” Tarlisa Davis said, who was walking with McCoy.

McKoy believes his walks have even stopped a homicide.

“We had one guy in tears. Somebody had really hurt him and he had a weapon and it was a pretty desperate scenario,” McKoy said. “We physically embraced him (and he) thought about his future.”
