Gun purchases on the rise in Illinois

Posted: Updated:

BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – There is an increase in the amount of people purchasing guns in Illinois.

In 2015, more than 400,000 background checks were conducted for gun buyers, compared to less than 200,000 a decade ago.

According to Chris Parciak, manager of Curt Smith Gun Shop, there are three things fueling the increase in gun buying: Fear, crime and panic. Handguns and other small pistols are flying off the shelves at the store.

Parciak said there has also been an increase in the amount of women purchasing guns.

“In the last two to three years I’d say, our business at one point was on 5 percent women, now it’s up to 25 or 30 percent now,” he said.

Parciak also said talk about greater gun control by President Obama and presidential hopefully Hillary Clinton is also ammunition for the increase.
