HAZELWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A 19-year-old suspect was taken to the hospital after he was reportedly assaulted after taking a toddler in Hazelwood Wednesday night, according to police.

The 3-year-old boy’s mother told police they were at Aubuchon Park around 7:20 p.m. when she let one of her friends, later identified as the suspect, push her son in a stroller around the park. After a short time had passed, the mother said she noticed her son and the man were gone.

Around 10:20 p.m., the boy’s mother called police to report a kidnapping.

While police were on their way to the mother’s home, located in the 7700 block of Chalmette, they received a call for an assault in progress in the 300 block of Chalmette. The assault victim, who was knocked in the head, was the man suspected of walking off with the toddler, police said.

When police arrived to the scene of the assault, the 19-year-old was drunk and had facial cuts due to the altercation, according to police. Witnesses to the incident fled the scene, but one person, described as a teenager, was taken into custody because police saw him throw a punch.

Authorities then received a call from a resident in the 8700 block of Sieloff Drive who reported finding a small child in a stroller on the sidewalk outside her apartment. Officers were able to confirm that child was the missing toddler.

The boy was found unharmed.

Officials said they are currently working to find out what happened between the time the mother last saw the boy and when he was found alone.

Officials with the Hazelwood Police Department said charges will be sought through the St. Louis County Prosecutor’s Office.
