UNIVERSITY CITY (KMOV.com) - Police say thieves have been stealing copper gutters from a neighborhood in University City.

It’s a problem residents say has been going on for years, which they thought was going away, but apparently not.

“When one lives in the city, one must understand that everything that isn’t nailed down disappears. It’s a terrible thing to say but it’s the way I live my life,” said Andy Dorris, resident.

University City police say there have been two separate incidents during the fourth week of March involving suspects either trying to steal or actually stealing copper gutters.  In one of the cases, a homeowner chased off the suspect.

Police say no one has been arrested. The situation is leaving the rest of the neighborhood extremely uneasy, residents say.

“It’s very disappointing because the cost of replacing the stuff is far in excess of the paltry money the scrap dealers give the scrapper,” said Dorris.

“From what I understand they’re getting pretty sophisticated. In about five minutes it’s gone. I don’t know how much you get for copper downspouts. I would say about 50 bucks,” said Chris Mutrux, resident.

Residents wonder how these thieves can be stopped. Some residents say they are leaving lights on to deter the thieves. Others say they want the neighborhood to be gated. And some say all you can really do is keep a lookout for suspicious vehicles or people.
