LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A father is facing charges after his son was shot in the back during an argument in unincorporated Lincoln County Sunday.

Richard Phillips, 61, told police his son had been drinking all day, “acting disrespectful and wearing his pants too low.” When he told his son to leave the home, located in the 6000 block of Copperhead Lane, he refused and flipped over a table, at which point Phillips shot him with a .38 caliber handgun, according to police.

Phillips allegedly told investigators his son asked what happened and he responded, “I shot you, that’s what happened.”

Phillips’ son told police his father shot him after they started arguing. He also said he flipped over the kitchen table to create a barricade when he was shot.

After being shot, Phillips’ son went to a neighbor’s home then was transported to the hospital. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Phillips has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. He is being held on a $500,000 cash-only bond.
