ST. LOUIS ( – Scammers are spoofing the FBI’s real telephone number to fool victims.

The scammers fraudulently display the FBI’s telephone number on the victim’s caller ID, then they tell the victim they are being investigated by the FBI for a tax violation, according to the FBI’s St. Louis Division. In some cases, the scammers are calling victims in western Missouri and spoofing the numbers of the FBI offices in eastern Missouri.

“These are old scams that keep evolving with a new twist,” said William Woods, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI St. Louis Division. “Just remember, the FBI does not call or e-mail private citizens to demand money or threaten arrest.”

Anyone who is contacted by a caller who claims to be with the FBI should call 314-589-2500.
