ST. LOUIS (AP) - A man released from prison in two Illinois killings and then convicted of a Missouri teen's slaying has died in prison.

The Missouri Department of Corrections said that 64-year-old Gregory Bowman died Tuesday at the Potosi Correctional Center of apparent natural causes.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Bowman had been ill for some time, which postponed a resentencing that could have reinstated a death sentence in the 1977 killing of Velda Joy Rumfelt in St. Louis County.

DNA testing linked him to the 16-year-old's death after his convictions were reversed in the separate 1978 kidnappings and murders of a 14- and 21-year-old in Belleville, Illinois. The death penalty was ordered, but a judge later found there was too much talk of the Illinois case at his sentencing.
