Expert: Doctors are hesitant to write prescriptions for medical marijuana in Illinois

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) – Some believe the number of doctors who are unwilling to sign off on medical marijuana cards in Illinois could impact the drug’s future availability.

Under Illinois law, only doctors can recommend marijuana for patients. The state gives the patients the right to buy the drug.

Currently, 3600 patients in Illinois have medical marijuana cards, a number below what was expected. One expert predicted 30,000 would be issued by now.

A doctor told News 4 he thinks stigma associated with marijuana and the possibility of bad public relations are the primary reasons why doctors are not recommending the drug.

Illinois is currently in the third year of a medical marijuana pilot program.
