Roundabout may be coming to Lake Saint Louis

A St. Charles Co. community is considering replacing a busy, congested intersection with a roundabout.

Lake Saint Louis has hired an engineer firm to study whether they should make changes at I-70 and Lake Saint Louis Boulevard.

The interchange at Lake Saint Louis Boulevard and Interstate 70 has a higher than average accident rate and while it’s important to get those numbers down, it’s the traffic congestion that is more of the driving force to get the city looking to change the intersection.

“People get frustrated waiting to squeeze into the roundabout,” said Evelyn Krazer, who works at Sunshine Realty about a block away from the site. “It’s on a general trust basis and I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

The city says the problem is the two intersections on the south side of I-70 are just too close to each other. The entire area is continuing to grow, including Saint Joseph Hospital West, which is adding more beds.

“MoDOT recommends around 1,500 feet of spacing between signals, but these new ones would be less than 200 feet,” said Derek Koestel, the Director of Public Works for Lake Saint Louis.

The roundabout would cost anywhere from $1 million to $1.5 million. The city would look into a variety of funding options, including federal grants.
