JUPITER, FL. (KMOV.com) -- The Cardinals trimmed their spring roster to 49 Monday, when they optioned outfielder Charlie Tilson to Triple-A Memphis.
Tilson, who completed his first full season in Double-A last year, was not expected to have a shot at breaking camp with the Cardinals. The 23-year-old could start the season in Triple-A, however, after hitting .295 last season in Springfield and .309 in the Arizona Fall League.
A second round pick in 2011 out of New Trier High School, Tilson is perhaps the fastest player in the organization. He stole 46 bases last season and four more in Arizona. This spring, he stole five bases even though he appeared in only eight games.
Tilson, who is on the 40-man roster, will now report to minor league camp, which began last week.
St. Louis has seven outfielders left on the spring training roster. The have 13 infielders, five catchers and 24 pitchers. 12 of the 49 remaining players are non-roster invitees.
