JUPITER, FL. (KMOV.com) -- The first wave of roster cuts for the Cardinals came Sunday, as the team optioned or re-assigned nine players to minor league camp.

LHP Jayson Aquino, a 23-year-old claimed by the Cardinals off waivers from the Indians, was optioned to Memphis. Pitchers Corey Littrell, Trey Nielsen, Daniel Poncedeleon, J.C. Sulburan and Luke Weaver, drafted in the first round by the Cardinals in 2014, were all assigned to minor league camp.

Joining the pitchers are three backstops. Steve Bean, Luis Cruz and Alberto Rosario were assigned to minor league camp, which began in earnest last week.

The spring training roster for the Cardinals is now down to 50, 12 of which were non-roster invitees.
