Remains of missing Grafton woman found in Mississippi River

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) – The body of a Grafton woman who went missing in December was found by a fisherman in the Mississippi River on Thursday.

Police say they have identified the body of Heather L. Bardsley, 41, of Grafton. She was reported missing on December 27. According to police, the fisherman contacted local authorities who followed up with the lead, finding the body of Bardsley about six miles south of Grafton.

The officer contacted the Jersey County Sheriff’s office, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officer, QEM Fire Department and the Illinois State Police, who requested a crime scene investigator.

An autopsy was performed at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, March 11, identifying the body as Bardsley. There are no signs of foul play, however the investigation is ongoing. The matter and cause of death are pending the official coroner’s and pathologist’s reports.

Preliminary reports say it appears Bardsley was swept up in flash floods during the major winter flooding. It is believed that her remains were underwater since the time of her missing and recently surfaced due to the recent warm water.
