EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

The mother of a boy, 11, who was hit and killed by a driver in East St. Louis made an emotional plea for the suspect to come forward.

Maurice Richards was hit by a car near the intersection of State Street and Post Place around 6:30 p.m. in East St. Louis Wednesday night. The person responsible fled the scene, while other motorists drove around him. Richards was taken to a hospital, but later died.

“A heartless person. They don’t care about no child, no nobody. Now my baby’s gone,” said Erica Steele, Richards’ mother. “It’s been hard. I’m not going to be alright.”

After several other cars drove around Richards, Willie Beard and several other motorists stopped to call 911.

“I told him to pray, pray now, and the people began to pray,” said Beard. “I ministered Christ to him. I told him angels were around him and I told him Jesus was there.”

At a vigil Friday night, many said they want the person responsible for Richards’ death to come forward.

“I want someone to come out and tell me who did this to my baby, instead of running around here like nothing happened,” Steele said.

East St. Louis police told News 4 they have received a lot of tips and are investigating each of them.
