ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Spring is severe weather season in the St. Louis area and an insurance expert has some tips for homeowners.

The expert suggests going over your homeowner’s policy with your insurance company so you know what is covered before severe weather strikes.

If a home is damaged by flooding, the expert suggests being on the lookout for shady contractors who target areas following severe weather.

“We have a lot of great contractors in St. Louis, but there are some that might come from the outside so we just encourage people don’t pay upfront cash for anything, don’t  sign a contract, don’t let anyone on your roof  unless you talk to your insurance agent first,” said State Farm Insurance Spokesman Jim Camoriano.

Experts suggest checking out contractors using the Better Business Bureau.
