CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The Parkway School District approved controversial changes to its sex education program Wednesday night.

Lots of parents turned out to the board’s meeting to share their opinions on the changes. Those changes included the teaching of gender identity, LGBT issues and sexual consent. The board's vote was 4-3.

Parents said they are split on whether the changes are a good idea. Some parents said the curriculum covers topics that are a vital part of a student’s development, while others felt the topics are inappropriate for elementary school students.

District officials said the curriculum will differ for younger students. They also mentioned there will be an option for parents to opt their children out.

Some parents believe the changes are part of an initiative funded by Planned Parenthood. The district said the organization has no connection to the new curriculum.
