Longtime St. Louis commissioner fired; he's not sure why

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS (AP) - The longtime excise commissioner in St. Louis is out of work, and he's not sure why.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that 67-year-old Robert Kraiberg was abruptly fired last week. He says he was given no warning or explanation, but believes it was for "political reasons."

Mayor Francis Slay declined comment, calling it a personnel decision.

Kraiberg has held the job since 1986, and was earning nearly $96,000 annually. The excise officer is responsible for handling liquor ordinances and conducting hearings.

He says that in his 30 years, he never received a less than satisfactory job evaluation. Kraiberg says he has hired an attorney.
