ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – According to the Federal Trade Commission, St. Louis ranks number one on the list of the worst areas in the nation for identity theft.

Since 2014, St. Louis has vaulted to the top of the list at number one with more than 19,000 reports of identity theft. Those reports were just from people who reported the crime to the Federal Trade Commission.

In many cases, criminals are targeting the metro area to steal tax refunds.

Some of those criminals can steal hundreds of thousands on their own by ripping off identities. Others can rake in millions of tax dollars by defrauding the system.

In years past, officials say most identity theft cases were focused in places like Florida and Washington D.C. But the problem has shifted to the Midwest.

If you are a victim, you can report identity theft to your local police and the Federal Trade Commission. You can also contact News 4 about your experience at taxcheats@kmov.com.
