FRANKLIN COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A Franklin County lawyer was detained at an airport in Mexico, arrested in connection with the death of his girlfriend.

It's a story sending shock waves through several small communities in Franklin County.

"It's a surprise. That's something that wouldn't happen here. You don't expect it here," says Patsy McKinney. She lives next door to the woman at the center of the death investigation.

"She was real quiet, she kept to herself a lot. She was a sweet girl, I think," says McKinney.

Authorities say Tamra Turpin was on vacation with her boyfriend, attorney John Loveless. They say she was found dead in a condo the two had rented. A forensic examination found she died of asphyxia strangulation.

"I was shocked. I really was shocked. I really just couldn't believe it. My neighbor called me and told me that I said I just don't know how that could happen," says McKinney.

Loveless now faces a criminal investigation in her death. Loveless runs a law firm in Franklin County and also owns a handful of buildings in St Clair.

"He has always been nice to me. He comes shopping down there sometimes for the store or his building. If he sees something he will buy it for the building," says Theresa Resser, who rents from Loveless.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for Turpin by a close friend of hers to help with expenses.
