SOULARD ( -- Some neighbors of a popular Soulard bar are trying to shut the establishment down.

Tropical Liqueurs, nicknamed Trops, opened in August of 2015 on 10th Street. The bar is known for its frozen drinks with an alcoholic kick and funny names.

“Soulard for us is really where we wanted the flagship,” said Billy Thompson, Trops' owner.

The bar's popularity may be it's demise. Neighbors want it closed because they say crowds spill out onto the street.

Matt Bowers lives across the street from Trops and said, "I expect a certain amount of noise and trash but it's a major safety concern for me at this point."

Bowers also says the crowds are more than a nuisance.

"On one occasion, I did see a guy pull out a gun and put it on top of his car and came out into traffic waiting for his counterpart," said Bowers.

Bowers and others say they have asked the city to revoke Trops’ liquor license and leave the Soulard neighborhood.

Thompson says he is trying to be a good neighbor by hiring security and stopping takeout sales. Thompson also says he hopes his efforts are enough to sway the St. Louis City Excise Division, which controls liquor licenses.

Officials say the Excise Division has already held a hearing and a decision is expected by the second week of March.
