Cardinals set for first game action, take on FAU

JUPITER, FL. ( -- The Cardinals kick off their first live spring action Wednesday, playing an exhibition game against Florida Atlantic University.

FAU alum Austin Gomber takes the mound as the starter, and will be followed by Daniel Poncedeleon, Deck McGuire, Corey Littrell, and Trey Nielsen. At the back end of the game Seung Hwan Oh and Miguel Socolovich are penciled in for work.

The starting lineup is as follows:

Tilson LF

G. Garcia SS

Wilson 3B

Rodriguez 1B

Washington RF

A. Garcia LF

Anna 2B

Ohlman C

Kelly DH

Greg Garcia is the only player currently projected to make the 25-man roster in the starting lineup, but Mike Matheny said Monday a few big Cardinal names might make an appearance in the game.

One player to watch is Gomber, who was the organization’s 2015 co-Minor League Pitcher of the Year.

He threw 135 innings last year in Low-A Peoria, striking out 140 hitters and walking 34.

Charlie Tilson is also intriguing, as the speedy outfielder had an impressive 2015 campaign in Double-A Springfield. Hitting .295 with four homers, nine triples and 20 doubles, the 23-year-old is in rhythm coming into this spring.
