Molina catches light bullpen session from Wainwright

JUPITER, FL. ( -- Yadier Molina got behind the plate Monday morning for his first receiving work from a live arm.

The Cardinals’ Gold Glover, rehabbing his way back from a second surgery to repair a torn ligament in his glove hand, caught a handful of pitches from Adam Wainwright.

“We picked the right guy,” Mike Matheny said of Wainwright. “You want a guy who throws it where he wants to. That helps.”

Wainwright got feedback from his backstop on how the glove hand felt, increasing the velocity from catch, to light pitching, to a soft bullpen session.

Molina has been progressing in the training room and in his rehab drills, churning his way toward his targeted return date of April 3rd, which is the St. Louis’ first game.

Monday’s receiving session was an encouraging step, putting him back behind the plate before the start of spring games.

Still unclear is how his repaired thumb will handle swinging the bat. That area of work hasn’t begun, as the team is focusing on getting his defense work back first.

“We want to see how this goes, and then we’ll adjust from there," Matheny said.
