ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – The Illinois Department of Transportation will begin a major construction project that is expected to cause traffic delays across the Poplar Bridge starting Monday.

At 9:00 a.m., crews will close the right lane of westbound Interstate 64 at Third Street in East St. Louis. The closure will cause a backup for people who take the Poplar Street Bridge.

During the closure, crews will be building a new ramp that will connect eastbound traffic from the Martin Luther King Bridge to westbound Interstate 55/64.

When the lane is reopen in November, IDOT crews will close the left lane of the interstate until Spring 2017.

IDOT officials suggest taking the Martin Luther King Bridge or the Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge during the closure.

It’s suggested that drivers leave 10 minutes earlier than normal to account for traffic.
