Granite City Steel workers, union reps travel to D.C after layoffs

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KMOV.com) -

Granite City Steel workers, along with other union and city officials traveled to Washington, D.C after the steel plant was forced to idle, causing 2,000 layoffs.

The reason for the layoffs, union leaders claim, is due to an unfair trade agreement. Now, they are fighting the arduous battle of leveling the playing field in order to keep their jobs.

A law was recently passed that some believe will level the playing field by cracking down on steel dumping, which involves loads of cheap steel being flooded into the US by foreign companies.

Recent cases of unfair trade practices when it comes to steel have increased, but the US Commerce Department lacks the money and manpower to effectively complete investigations. Congress has vowed to support the department’s efforts and many Congressional members say they will fully fund the investigations.
