GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Leaders in Madison County will meet Friday morning to discuss the “significant results” regarding talks with lawmakers about the nation’s steel industry.

After Granite City Steel had to give pink slips to nearly 2,000 workers, the Madison County chairman, Granite City mayor and the Local United Steel Workers President traveled to Washington, DC. The group went straight to lawmakers to let them know how the layoffs don’t just impact Granite City, but other surrounding towns too.

“We plan on bringing it to lawmakers to show that this is a nonpartisan, this isn’t a democrat/republican issue, we all want for the same thing. We want to save our steel industry,” Said Granite City Mayor Ed Hagnauer.

When the economy tanked in 2008, the plant found itself in a similar situation to what is being seen today, but it was able to recover.

Layoffs at the plant began last October.
