WASHINGTON PARK (KMOV.com) -

A mother and another woman are facing charges for their alleged roles in the death of a 3-year-old boy in Washington Park.

Tuesday, officers received a call from a residence in the 5500 block of Caseyville Avenue that a child had fallen down a set of stairs.

Estella Edwards lives in the neighborhood where the incident occurred and said, "Like wow. I had no knowledge of anyone staying over there."

When police arrived, they found Alen Sams dead, according to the report.

The boy's mother and another female occupant at the home were taken into custody for questioning.

Police Chief Tony Tomlinson said in a press release that an autopsy revealed evidence that ruled Sams' death as a homicide.

On Thursday, Prosecuting Attorney Brendan Kelly issued charges of aggravated battery of a child under 13 against Sams' mother, Dyamond Honore, 20, and a family friend, who was at the home at the time of Sams' death, Tiara Johnson, 24, was charged with first-degree murder.

Both Honore and Johnson are being held in the St. Clair County Jail. Honore’s bond was set at $200,000, while Johnson’s bond was set at $1.5 million.

According to the Department of Children and Family Services, more than 70 children died in 2015 from abuse and neglect in Illinois, which is slightly lower from the year before.
