UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The University City Council condemned the police department’s building during a meeting Monday night.

The building that houses the police department dates back to 1903 and has been a concern for months. For years the council has discussed building a new police department or renovating the current one, but it’s filled with asbestos and mold.

City Councilwoman Paulette Carr said at least one officer quit because of the department’s condition.

City Manager Lehman Walker said they have three options: Immediate renovations, use mobile units or move into a vacant building.

“We have been trying to address the problems, much of it is related to funding, much of it is related to just the age of the facility. We have a large police force here, and we are doing what we can in a timely manner to make sure that we can continue to move forward on this,” Walker said.

No final decision for how to handle the condemned building was made at Monday night’s meeting.
