Judge mulls quest for Ferguson grand jury witnesses' names

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS (AP) - A federal judge is weighing whether to release the names of witnesses who testified during the grand jury proceeding in the Ferguson police shooting death of Michael Brown.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/1L5JI38 ) reports that attorneys on both sides of the family's wrongful-death lawsuit are seeking the identities of the witnesses, who were promised their names would be kept secret. St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch, whose office oversaw the grand 2014 jury proceedings, opposes the request.

The grand jurors' November 2014 decision to not indict Ferguson police officer Darren Wilson for shooting Brown rekindled violent protests that immediately followed Brown's death.

Grand jury proceedings typically are secret, but McCulloch has released details of testimony in Brown's case, without the grand jury witnesses' names attached.
