Suspect caught on camera attempting to steal family's iron rooster

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( – Officials are searching for a suspect who was caught on camera climbing over an iron fence in an attempt to steal a family’s iron rooster.

News 4 has been tracking metal thefts across the St. Louis-area for years and now we’re checking to see if that’s why this would-be thief targeted “Clyde,” the family’s rooster.

“We bought a brightly covered rooster from Gringo Jones and we came out to discover it hanging from the fence,” said Jim Cominsky.

Cominsky, who lives in Benton Park, said he immediately checked his surveillance video.

“Around midnight, I saw someone jump over the fence, come up this way bring the chicken back, hang it over the fence, jump the fence drive his truck back up with the intent to pick it up,” said Cominsky.

Clyde never made it inside the truck, but the thief’s actions leading up to that are all on camera and in the hands of the police.

Cominsky said this isn’t the first time his home has been a target. He told News 4 about an incident a couple of years ago that is set to go in front of a judge later this year.

“Somebody scaled the fence and actually entered the house and my neighbor was bold enough to confront them carrying pieces out,” he said.

Cominsky said that’s when he bought the cameras, not knowing years later, those cameras would capture the attempted iron rooster theft.

“I was glad I was able to catch it on tape but kind of surprised someone would be so brazen,” said Cominsky.

Police are investigating. They say there was a similar incident over the weekend in the Benton Park neighborhood.
