(KMOV.com) – The man allegedly responsible for the death of a 23-year-old man while out on bond for another alleged DWI offense has been sentenced to eight years in prison.

Mark McKay, 40, is in jail, but family members of the victim say he should have been behind bars the entire time before allegedly causing that crash that killed Marko Knezevic.

“I feel like the justice system failed us,” said Vesna, Marko’s sister. Marko was killed along I-270 in South County last August after his motorcycle hit a crashed SUV that police say was driven by McKay.

City prosecutors tried to get McKay behind bars for two years after he plead guilty to a DWI charge in 2012, but McKay filed motions, changed attorneys, and finally tried to take back his guilty plea. After all that, a St. Louis judge sentenced him to eight years in prison on Friday.

“I think he was babysat by the law for a little too long and he should have been in prison way before his fifth DWI offense,” Vesna said.
