NORTH COUNTY (KMOV.com) – A woman was almost tricked out of her money after receiving what appeared to be a gift card in the mail.

A North County woman who wanted her identity hidden, received a phone call followed by a postcard saying she won a $100 gift card to various stores, including Walmart.

The woman said, "I called the number back and they said, ‘We see you used your charge card and we need the number from the charge card.’”

The woman says she did not fall for the scam. She says she went to her local Walmart and spoke with the manager.

"I talked with a manager and the manager said they've been dealing with this for over a month now,” said the woman.

The fake gift cards could be ending up in mailboxes all over the area.

Aaron Mullins, Senior Manager for Walmart Media Relations, says scammers often try to take advantage of the company’s name. Mullins also says Walmart has a website on fraud.

"I don't want to see somebody get scammed,” said the woman.

If you receive this particular gift card in the mail, ignore it and throw it away.
