ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The St. Louis County Police Department is giving away free locks to county residents.

This is a program they have from time to time throughout the year to keep gun owners accountable and safe.

It's one lock per person, but it’s one lock that could mean the difference between life and death.

"It’s an unattended weapon and someone you have in the house maybe could get a hold of it and is curious,” Aaron Dilks, St. Louis County officer, said. “Just keep that from happening, keep them locked up and avoid any terrible things that could happen

You can pick up a free lock at St. Louis County’s Fenton precinct.

Just bring a valid ID and proof of being the gun owner.
