ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

St. Charles County is offering a tracking device that can track someone with a medical condition such as Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia who has a history of wandering away.

A device with a radio frequency is strapped to the person that is tracked. Each device comes with its own frequency number which allows searcher to track, within a few inches, the lost person inside or outside.

“Each client wears a transmitter in a case like this, looks like a watch you wear your wrist or ankle and it emits a signal 24/7,” said Cpl. Steve Case with the St. Charles County Police Department.

The device is known as Care Trak and has been used for more than 25 years by more than 700 police departments around the country. However, Care Trak is making its first appearance in the St. Louis area.

Those who want to be a part of the program must live in St. Charles County have a 24-hour caregiver and have a history of wandering away. There is a one-time fee of $300 and $6 is paid every two months for new batteries.
